One of my favorite jokes of all time is the classic moth joke by the late, great Norm Macdonald. The joke starts off as dumb as it gets: «A moth goes into a podiatrist’s office, and the podiatrist’s office says, ‘What seems to be the problem, moth?'» But in no time, Norm manages to craft a seemingly simple gag into a meandering tale about a moth suffering through life like some sort of tragic Dostoevsky character. The magic of Norm was that he relished the groan of the audience and often made us endure an exhausting trudge of a setup only to circle back and arrive at the dumbest punchline ever. If you haven’t had the pleasure of watching Norm deliver his perfect moth joke on Conan, do yourself a favor.
