After 25 years of entertaining kids on PBS, the network is bidding adieu to Arthur, a beloved children’s television series based on the books by Marc Brown. While many people are mourning the loss or celebrating the series’ title as longest running children’s program, the whole thing is mostly making me feel really, really old. As someone who was raised by a mother who restricted our television viewing to public channels, Arthur was a huge part of my childhood, starting from when the first episode aired. 

The series followed its titular character, a young and bespectacled aardvark, on his everyday adventures growing up in the fictional ‘Elwood City.’ Arthur learns valuable lessons and sometimes gets into trouble with his gang of animal friends, which includes a rabbit, a bear, a bulldog, a moose and a couple monkeys. While the show has undoubtedly made an impact on two generations of television-watchers, it’s also made a huge impact on the world of memes. There are at least ten legendary formats that use stills of the show, and Arthur memes have been circulating the internet (especially on Twitter) for years.
