Inane Job Posting Demands Only 20-30 Year Old Female Applicants Over 5’2

It’s no secret that some jobs discriminate based on age and gender. There’s a reason that restaurants typically have teenage girl hostesses and servers and teenage boy dishwashers and busboys. It’s not because one group is uniquely skilled at one of these jobs but because of industry conventions. There are still incredibly legal ways jobs can discriminate against certain groups. For example, have you ever applied to a position where one of the requirements is «the ability to lift up to 50 pounds»? Often, this requirement never comes up in the actual job itself. That is because it is a strategy employers use to attempt to discourage disabled people from applying to their positions. Yikes!

In the Philippines, they don’t have the same protections banning employers from explicitly discriminating based on sex. Therefore, employers and recruiters can state the sex and age of the person they want to hire in the job description. In this case, a hiring notice for a cashier went even further than that.
