I think what Ms. Del Rey is speaking about here is the all too familiar phenomenon of watching someone you have a crush on play a video game (or perhaps playing one with them.) 

It’s one of our most prevalent contemporary mating rituals. «Come watch me play GTA,» says some, and millions of hopeful lovers quickly abide. Watching someone play a video game is the perfect balance of intimacy without being too real. It’s flirtation at its finest: cat and mouse, push and pull.
