Ok, forgive me if this is something everyone already has thought about… but does the word «funny» come from the word «fun?» It would sort of make sense. The concepts are definitely interrelated. But they’re not synonymous. There are plenty of fun things that aren’t funny. Have you ever laughed on a roller coaster? Probably not. But odds are you had a bucket of fun. The converse is also true. I’ve laughed at things that definitely aren’t fun. Watching somebody trip and fall on an ice skating rink might not be fun, but it sure is funny. 

Ah, the English language. It holds secrets and idiosyncrasies that are so easy to fall into. Thank goodness I’m a native speaker. I greatly admire anyone who takes on the burden of learning it from scratch. But to further confuse, these memes happen to be both fun and funny. Try that on for size.
