The other day I was waiting for the bus and an overwhelming sense of ennui overcame me. ‘Is this all there is?’ I thought to myself as I watched dead leaves and trash twirl with the cold wind. Just as my mind began to sink further into the darkness, the sound of hysterical laughter momentarily shook me out of despair. A nearby man was laughing so hard there were tears running down his cheeks. He gasped for breath between loud giggles and slapped his knee hard every time he looked down at his phone. ‘What are you looking at that’s making you laugh so hard?’ I asked. Unable to speak, he handed me his phone as he continued to chuckle violently. What I saw would change my life forever: memes. Soon enough, the laughter was pouring from me and hasn’t stopped since. I’m literally laughing and shaking right now as I write this, just thinking about memes.
