Everything we do in life has an element of performance. From bumping into an acquaintance in the street to reassuring ourselves that the door is locked at night, we all have our unconscious scripts that we play out to ensure things go smoothly. Relatable memes are one of the most obvious ways in which we get a mirror held up to our repetitive ways of doing things, and sometimes they do it too well. 

Almost every meme ever made is like a stupid little one act play that waits for some applause, and there is nothing that we all love more than giving it. That, or we throw tomatoes, or do it over in a better and funnier way. Whatever happens, we extract some entertainment from the process. In this world where we’re forever completing these performative rituals, it is a great way to take some of the pressure off.
