Geography Nerd Guesses Where He Is On Google Maps In Under A Second, Gets It Eerily Accurate

Directions have never been my strong point. For me, journeys from A to B tend to be a squiggly line rather than a straight one; Google Maps seems to be forever sending me in the wrong direction when I’m in unusual places. On occasion, I’ve even been known to get slightly lost in an area ten minutes from where I actually live.

While it’s a personal failing that can get pretty annoying, it does have some upsides. You learn to enjoy the idiosyncrasies of taking the scenic route, and that nine times out of ten, not knowing where you’re going isn’t the worst thing in the world. It also means that I can marvel all the more at somebody like @georainbolt, whose magic memory for the topography of the world has impressed people recently after he showed himself playing geography game GeoGuessr with astounding speed. Guessing the places where he was dropped in Google Maps based on a few simple visual cues, many of his answers ended up being surprisingly close. Clearly, I need to be taking some tips from this guy (but maybe not his tendency to figure out exactly where random people on the internet are).
