Listen. I’m not ashamed to be an American. We’re not all bad. But despite the pride I have to be from the US of A, there’s an awful lot about this country that is hard for me to wrap my mind around. Even after living here for the better part of half a century. 

Recently, a Redditor asked the r/AskReddit subreddit to share the hardest thing for people to comprehend about American culture. And while some of the answers, like our deeply flawed healthcare system and lack of paid time off, are a bit predictable, there were some interesting responses that probably wouldn’t occur to the natives. There are just so many things we blindly accept about our culture and society. We’ve put together some of the most fascinating and baffling responses, but there are way more where these came from.
