Have y’all heard the big news? There’s going to be a sequel to Moana coming out this November! This is a wild piece of news for several reasons. I’m sure I’m not alone in having no idea that a sequel had even been greenlit! It was initially supposed to be a Disny+ series but is being reworked as a feature-length film. That detail makes me a bit nervous because turning unserialized TV shows into movies is precisely what Disney used to do back in the Aughts when they were turning out ten terrible straight-to-video sequels per year. The other news that fills me with trepidation is that Lin-Manuel Miranda won’t be returning to write the music. I know he gets a lot of flack for being corny, but he wrote the music for the two best Disney musicals in recent memory (Moana and Encanto). If you are cautiously optimistic about returning to the heart of the ocean, these Disney memes might be a trustworthy sidekick. What can I say except, «You’re welcome.»
