One thing I love about the Midwest is the way Midwesterners tell you bad news. They will bend over backward to see the good in something and sugarcoat it so hard that you come out with cavities. Some may appreciate bluntness, but I think there’s an art to beating around the bush. Not everyone can do it tactfully and organically, but a Midwestern mom sure can. 

Your fish could have just died and she would say something «Mr. Blueface has gone on to meet his brothers and sisters on a sunny pasture on the other side of town.» Sure, it might take you a minute to figure out that your beloved betta is dead, and question why a fish would want to be on a sunny pasture, but it would surely soften the blow.
