I think the thing that made Star Wars work so well was its simplicity. It’s an uncomplicated tale of good guys fighting bad guys that appeals to kids and adults alike. In the 70s, a ton of changes were happening in the film industry. The Hayes Code was finished and done, and with that, movies did not have to uphold any moral meaning to get made. They could be as violent, grimy, and unvirtuous as filmmakers wanted them to be. Star Wars (1977) wasn’t exactly working with the language of s*x and violence like other 70s films, but it was willing to make a new kind of adventure movie that wasn’t so moralistic. Gone are the days of regular cowboy movies with lame predictable good guys and bad guys; Swashbuckling pirate movies were out, and Space Cowboys were in.
