Memes: they are the gift that keeps on giving. They’re free, in plentiful supply, and give us something to think about and hopefully laugh at every single godforsaken day. When we are slumped over our phones, scrolling through meme after meme in search of some distracting humor or deeper meaning, it can seem like they are the ones doing all the heavy lifting. That being said, it’s us that gives them the audience; memes would be nothing without the people that consume them. The people might not make the meme, but they are what lifts it from dumb passing thought to full-fledged phenomenon. It’s a kind of mediocre power to have, but at least it gives us a sense of purpose (or distracts us from not having one). We’ve got to be thankful for that, because many other things in life just seem like a reminder of everything we don’t want to deal with.
