A Lump of Memes All Squashed Together

Pretty often with memes, once you have seen enough of them they all tend to become one kind of homogenous mass. You get to know all the different themes, formats, and punchlines that crop up a lot and you start to see the world of online content through a permanent random meme generator filter.

While on paper this sounds like it makes things tiring, in a lot of ways it makes us more eager to keep on plowing through even more memes. We are all creatures of habit, and it’s comforting to surround ourselves with the familiar noise of silly internet pictures. It means we have no choice but to keep on looking at them for distraction, and it’s hardly the worst thing we could be doing. They may be the entertainment equivalent of adult baby food, but they keep us happy for a little while. We can’t ask for more than that.
