While most experienced meme consumers have, over the years, conditioned themselves to expect the unexpected, many of us return to memes over and over because we find them comforting. Sure, we may not always be able to predict what zany witticism will next spring from the brains of weirdos on the internet, but we know that it is there with the purpose of providing us fleeting entertainment. We all need a dose of distraction to take away from the depression of reality, and although memes often reflect this back at us, they still offer an escape from everything else. Being online is an integral part of our lives, but many of the things we do here feel like an entirely separate part of it. This is especially true when it comes to memes, which could only communicate in the way they do in the places that they do. It’s all the more reason to enjoy them.
