I wish I could say I’m a genuine fan of Westerns. I have not sought out the classics, but movies like Hud and Shane are definitely on my list of movies I need to watch before I leave this mortal plane. My favorite western movies are all about women’s place in the Wild West. In particular, I love the movie Calamity Jane due in no small part to it being a musical about an iconic woman of the West who’s a little gay coded. I also enjoyed the Western movie musical The Harvey Girls, even though objectively, it’s not that great. It’s about a group of women moving into a Western town to work at a wholesome restaurant to combat the slimy saloon girls. Judy Garland plays one of the wholesome newcomers, and a young Angela Lansbury plays a girl who knows her way around town. But I digress; you’re not here to hear about my movie opinions.
