People will go feral over Instagram handles. They’re so closely linked to your digital identity that people get territorial over them. If you’ve had the same username for years, I understand not wanting to let it go. On the other hand, if I kept my username from back in the day of AOL instant messenger… I’d probably lose some friends over sheer secondhand embarrassment. What was it about middle school that had us running to the most random, embarrassing, fangirl usernames? Do kids still do that now? I feel like they’re more advanced than that.
