One of the great paradoxes of life is how it manages to be both so boring and so unpredictable all at once. The tedium of being an adult with a 9 to 5 seems completely guaranteed, until some curveball comes along, and then it doesn’t. While the feeling of being comfortable looks slightly different for everyone, it is what most of us are looking for. It’s part of the reason that memes are so popular, because they give us different types of comfort. They entertain, they distract, and they take us out of ourselves when we need it most (and sometimes when we don’t). Even as their message and appearance changes, their purpose stays the same. You might think this would get boring, too, but we’re still hanging on in there. The predictable randomness of memes maintains a perfect balance, unlike with many other things. It is a truly rare talent.
