Yesterday saw a painful blow to daytime television: after 21 seasons and 23 years, Dr Phil has decided to wrap up his self-titled show. America’s most famous former clinical psychologist has had enough. We’ve seen over two decades of him giving his straight shooting (and ever-so-slightly exploitative) guidance to troubled individuals keen to get their five minutes of syndicated TV fame, and this spring will see it finally come to an end.
That’s a long time for a show to rack up meme opportunities, and that’s something that one Phil McGraw has always done with flair. Everything from his monologues, to this Twitter prescence, to his eerie resemblance to an M&M have been deployed by the internet for entertainment purposes. Oh, and nobody who was living, breathing and social media using in 2017 will ever forget Cash Me Ousside.
It will be sad to know that there are going to be fewer opportunities for this high level memery in the future, which means we have no choice but to take a gander at a few of the hits. So long, Dr Phil. Your psychiatric advice may have been questionable, but the ridiculous memes you inspired were a thing of beauty.
