I have a confession to make: almost every time that I have experimented with creative writing, my chosen medium has been poetry. As the form with the minimum of words and the maximum of overblown, oblique metaphors, it’s the obvious choice for an angsty and commitment-phobic teenager. Unlike many erstwhile youthful poets, I don’t (completely) cringe when I think of the things I wrote. Some of it was halfway decent! I even won a prize at college one time.

Predictably, the many distractions of working adult life have got in the way of me doing any more dabbling in verse. Nonetheless, it remains one of my favorite things to both read and write. Perhaps it’s no coincidence that many meme makers seem to like turning their craft towards poetry as well. There are plenty of jokes to be made about all things poetic, and the memes don’t hold back. Let these examples inspire a rhyming couplet or two.
