My highlight of the past few days has been hearing some bad news about somebody that I don’t like. Does this make me a horrible person? Possibly. However, that isn’t going to get in the way of me delighting at the karmically appropriate misfortune of an individual I have felt wronged by. With good reason, smugness is a feeling that is often looked down upon. Few people enjoy being around a serial gloater, especially when it is happening at the expense of someone else. At the same time, it’s an emotion with an unparalleled high. We could argue that this is because it’s often unethical, but many of the best things in life are. Plus, if we manage to keep our smugness to inconsequential things (like memes!), then maybe it isn’t so bad after all. At least, that’s what we can keep telling ourselves if our conscience is keeping us up at night.
