Remember those soy sauce commercials in the early aughts that introduced us (at least me) to the elusive 5th taste, umami? I feel like Don Draper would have been loved that ad. It really evoked that sumptuous, savory, delicious yet indescribable flavor that’s in things like barbecue and mushrooms. Just thinking about it now is making my mouth water. That well-rounded, balanced, and addictive flavor. It’s something I’m constantly chasing. 

Cravings are a curious thing. Your brain can be sometimes so specific about what it wants. Like right now, my brain is blasting miso soup signals in my direction and I’m thinking about how I can accomplish that for myself. The nice thing about living in a big, diverse city is that almost every kind of food is available at your fingertips at all times. It’s great for my soul, risky for my bank account. But you know what’s free and delicious? Memes. Enjoy while they’re hot.
