Boredom is a tricky thing. I remember getting so bored as a kid, in the back of a car, at church, or waiting for my mom to leave a party. I would count ceiling tiles, watch water droplets race on the car window, and study the patterns on the carpet. I got so good at occupying myself with very little that I started to crave alone, unstructured time. I’ve gotten worse at that as I’ve gotten older, as have many of us since our phones are there to zap the bored right out of our brains at a moment’s notice. One of my New Year’s resolutions is to do less. To cultivate that kind of boredom again and see what happens. It might lead to some fun ideas.
