It’s that time of the week again; you’re looking forward to your crying session as you walk into your therapist’s office. The furniture is always a deep, earthy color, there are tons of grown-up-looking books, and the office smells like your grandma’s house. In other words, it’s all very neutral, in a sense. Your therapist could be your sibling in terms of age unless you actually use your grandma as your therapist, and you feel slightly uncomfortable the first few sessions as you’re getting to know this person who you will eventually spill all your deepest, darkest secrets to. As of late, therapy has become a hot commodity, a spicy (and expensive) trend of self-reflection and emotional well-being. Your wallet may be bursting at the seams, and you may feel financially frazzled, but on the flip side, your mental health concerning every other issue in your life is somewhat balanced.

As for your therapist’s questions, they are all vaguely similar, kind of open-ended. They ask you, ‘and how does that make you feel?’. In turn, you feel like you require a magic 8-ball to answer that… signs point to… confused. The occasional ‘repressed memories’ and ‘coping mechanisms’ are thrown around like confetti. Someone should invent a dictionary to understand their secret motives, as they attempt to get us to reach the answer to our problem ourselves through carefully curated questions.
