Free Therapy From the Funny and Self-Deprecating Minds of Twitter

«You may need therapy yourself» is a line from 1999’s Analyze This that has somehow become an inside joke between my friends and I. We put on our best De Niro accent and giggle our way through any vaguely therapy-related conversation. We may be poking fun at the line (uttered by a slightly ashamed mob boss in therapy), but it’s probably true no matter who you’re talking to. The fact is, nearly everyone I’ve met could benefit from doing a little supervised work on themselves.

Though being a neurotic and therapy-going New Yorker used to be something of a stereotype, it seems that the rest of the country has caught up to this need to understand ourselves and, well, be better people. Whether or not it always works is another story. The prevalence of teletherapy, and apps such as BetterHelp and TalkSpace, has made doing that work a lot more accessible. It’s no longer quite as much of a luxury. And that means people talk about it. A lot. On Twitter. We’ve rounded up some of the funnier jokes about seeking counsel, but rest assured. If you type «therapy» into that search bar, you’ll find a world of entertainment. And probably a lot of cringe.
