As a kid, I played so many supporting characters in children’s theatre productions based on Disney movies. The most infamous of these performances was my stint as Le Fou from Beauty and the Beast Jr., where I wore the crustiest horrible wig ever. The guy who played Gaston was about 40 and was obsessed with Beauty and the Beast, and I was a 15-year-old girl who could not rely on him to remember his lines or do the choreography that was given to him. This was not my first villain sidekick rodeo because three years before that, I played Flotsam, Ursula’s crony, in The Little Mermaid Jr. During that production, the 18-year-old playing Jetsam yelled at me in the middle of a show so intensely that I cried. She bought me a braclet to apologize. The community theatre world was a wild place to grow up in, but at least I had the warm embrace of Disney IPs to help me through it.
