Last night I had a dream that there was no internet. Instead of compulsively shopping for random garbage online at 2am, people had to go walk to a nearby store at normal business hours and thoughtfully select an item from the available options. Instead of obsessively stalking each other on Instagram and then acting aloof and unbothered IRL, crushes had to be brave and interact with each other in a genuine and vulnerable way. Instead of sidetweeting, cyberbulling, and low-blow personal insults, people had to argue about politics face to face and look each other in the eye while they delivered their opinions. To be honest, it wasn’t so bad! The only thing that I missed was memes. Where were the memes? Instead of memes, people tried to tell each other jokes, but they just didn’t hit the same. Instead of memes, people collaged pictures together and sent them in the mail, but that took way too long. I woke up thinking that we might be better off without the internet in a lot of ways, but the loss of memes just isn’t worth it.
