We could sit here all day arguing about what actually makes a meme good. After a while, you lose track of the times that you see some kind of tacky meme format get inexplicably popular, or you see a rare one-off that is so specifically relatable that it’s hard to believe it wasn’t made for you personally. There are any number of different factors that go into making a likeable meme, but number one has to be the gut reaction we have to it. Just like pheromones supposedly make random people more attractive, some memes must just have the kind of composition that makes us inexplicably drawn them. It might not sound logical, but it’s not like the content of many dumb internet images is anyway. None of it matters, it just passes the time until we have to do something useful. So, we may as well bypass the argument and just start scrolling.
