Ah, 2022. It’s never been easier to plunge down an internet hole. Take it from me. I am staring at a screen all day, refreshing Twitter and Instagram, scrolling as my eyes glaze over and my body gradually begins to resemble the hunchback of Notre Dame. When your entire job is looking at the internet, you basically create new neural pathways devoted to consuming information. I can begin writing an article about the Habsburgs and somehow end up reading about a new breed of cat that fits in the palm of your hand. Most of the time I can’t even retrace my proverbial steps without giving my browser history a hard look, and even then I am overwhelmed by the number of pages I’ve managed to visit during a short workday. As annoying as it is to lose track of the time, and to get lost in stacks of Wikipedia, I do happen upon quite a few memes, many when I’m not even looking for them. They’re a momentary respite from the thankless and cyclical nature of this work. Maybe they’ll provide the same to you.
