‘I quit the company’: Employee breaks employment contract; boss refuses to pay them wages amounting to $10,000 as a result

Our circumstances often change, as life throws all kinds of hurdles at us, varying in their severity. In this case, OP was working as a medical professional, and their spouse got a new job in another state, meaning that OP would have to move with them. According to OP’s boss, they were breaking their employment contract, which was technically true, but OP’s boss took it harder than they should have. OP’s boss said OP wasn’t entitled to an entire month’s wage, as their contract stated that were they to quit before one year was up, some penalties would include financial penalties.

This is no low sum we’re talking about here; one month of work was potentially between 10-12k for OP, which is a huge amount of money to lose despite working all those hours. So OP took to r/antiwork, as they suspected that their boss was perhaps attempting to enforce penalties that weren’t technically legal. OP’s suspicions were correct, to say the least. Scroll down to read what happened next.

For more, here is an employee who went against his boss after they took away the other employees’ stereo that they would listen to while working in construction because this boss didn’t appreciate listening to ‘Mexican music’.
