Everyone loves a parade: World Series Champions, gay people, and those who love Easter for big-hat reasons. I only wish that more holidays would embrace the parade model as the ideal means of celebration. As a kid, I went to the 4th of July parades, which were the most fun ever! They were in the suburbs of Chicago and consisted of people on floats throwing tootsie rolls at children. Said children feverishly ran around, trying to grab as many candies as possible from the street. It might not have filled me with patriotic spirit, but it sure filled me with some good taffy. I’ve lived in three other places since then, and so far, none of them have had a 4th of July parade, and that’s a darn shame.
