At least in the US, talking about how much money you make is gauche. My opinion is split on this because, on the one hand, it’s useful to discuss how much you’re making, so you can know if you’re being cheated or not. It’s also just fun info to know about your friends because if you’re any friend of mine, you know it has no bearing on your value as a person. On the other hand, people who boast about how much money they make, or are constantly putting money at the center of the conversation really get on my nerves. I suppose what matters is the tone you take.
