Memes are like currency within a fandom. You use them to gain trust among your fellow fans, you generate goodwill by sharing them, and it’s a chance to display just how much you know about your chosen fandom. They’re the common ground upon which fan communities are built. They spark discourse, create insiders, and most importantly, make us laugh. This is especially true in the Star Wars fandom, one whose well of memes will never run dry. 

Before the internet, how did Star Wars fans communicate? Probably through in-person fan clubs and newsletters and movie theater meetups. There’s something to be said for this, but it’s much easier now that we can send funny macros to each other at the speed of light. It’s all very space age… like Star Wars.
