As real Tolkien-heads know, the (mostly) happily ever after of The Lord of the Rings trilogy that millions have come to know and love wasn’t always a sure thing. J.R.R. Tolkien wasn’t shy in considering some alternate endings to the epic tale that weren’t quite as victorious, such as Frodo throwing himself into Mount Doom along with the ring or losing the fight against Sauron after becoming lord of the Nazgul. 

All things considered, the canon ending is probably the one that most of the fandom prefers. That doesn’t stop them from riffing on the series in other ways, though, and finding alternate ways of enjoying it through the creative medium of memes. It’s a testament to the strength of the story that all the silly internet humor that it inspires only makes it stronger. No fans can meme quite like LOTR fans can meme, and that’s just the way that they like it.
