While many, including those who truly enjoy them, are quick to write off memes as a mere lighthearted joke, that couldn’t be further from the truth. OK, so most of the time their main purpose is humor, but often they say more than just what their combination of words and pictures tells us on the surface. They also tell a story about the person who produced them, and the times in which they were produced. If they are the kind of thing that you like, they help to say something about you, and if you don’t like them, then they bring out your judgmental side. 

All in all, there is plenty more to be gleaned from memes than just simple entertainment. If that is the only thing you want from them, though, we aren’t here to judge. They can do that job too, and there is nothing wrong with appreciating them for that.
