Asking for a raise is not an easy thing to do. It’s putting yourself out there, and putting yourself out there is not something that everyone feels comfortable doing. You also might fear rejection. It’s hard to work yourself up to ask for something and then not get it. It can make you feel like you’re not valued in your company, and you might start to want to look elsewhere. There’s a lot riding on a raise request. It can be the difference between being happy at your job and needing to get the heck out of there.
What’s even worse is having to remind your boss about a raise request. You already did the hard work of asking, and then you’re left hanging, wondering what’s going to happen. Plus, every week that goes by is another week when you’re not being paid your raise. It’s lost money, and it’s lost time. It can lead you to be pretty disillusioned with your workplace. And once you start becoming disillusioned, it’s only a matter of time before you’re slacking off and looking for other gigs.
