A doormat is a chance to make a first impression with your guests. It’s likely the first thing that they notice when coming into your house, and as they wipe their feet on it, they’re probably starting to piece together how you live. If it’s unadorned and well-used, it might say that you have guests over a lot and you’re always throwing parties. If it’s one of those fancy ones from West Elm, it might say that you enjoy the finer things in life, and you want others to know that.
If you have a doormat that says «Go Away,» then you might think twice about knocking on that door (especially if you’re a Mormon missionary or someone trying to sell candy). Your doormat says a lot about you, so it’s wise to choose one with care. I personally do not have a doormat. I don’t know what that says about me besides that I live in an apartment building and don’t like spending money I don’t have to.
