What isn’t a meme now? No, really. Think about that for a second. What isn’t a meme? Sometimes I look around at the state of things and wonder where satire begins and reality ends. Do memes imitate life or does life imitate memes? I really can’t tell. If the medium is the message, then the medium of the 21st century is memes. Memes began as an efficient vehicle for ideas to spread far and wide across the internet—ideas about humans, culture, and society. Now it seems that the reverse has happened. Meme’s aren’t the vehicle anymore, we are the vehicle for memes. Our fascination in subjects and events is driven by the memetic potential of the thing being perceived. Is it good or bad? Have we always been wired this way or has the internet irreparably changed human behavior? Will we ever know? My attention span is already waning as I struggle to complete a coherent thought.
