It’s easy to idealize the past when the present is, um, lacking. Maybe that’s why nostalgia is so present in media. We’re not just talking about those ’90s kids memes. We’re talking about all the music that hearkens back to bygone eras – like the ’70s and ’80s. It can be said that every generation experiences a degree of wistfulness, but that desire to escape to the past feels particularly potent right now. 2015 was a simpler time. A happier time. A less grueling and mentally exhausting time. While blasting our favorite pop-punk songs might bring us some escapist respite, we also like to distract ourselves with history memes. They make us feel smart while also reminding us that there was plenty to escape in the years of our forefathers. Things might feel crappy right now, but at least we’re not getting drafted (yet). Having the internet doesn’t hurt, either.
