In my house, nobody is allowed to ‘just come over.’ I’ll admit it, I’m protective of my home space in a way, but there’s something about the rush of anxiety that occurs when someone just decides to stop by. What if I’m still wearing my pajamas? What if I’m in the middle of something? I don’t necessarily want an open door revolving so that people can come through and derail my personal operations.
Perhaps that makes me a hermit or an unsociable person, but like the newlyweds in this next story, it’s important to put boundaries in place—especially when you have pushy in-laws who will gladly insert themselves in your home without warning. This mother-in-law was elated that her son finally got his dream home, but instead of sending a housewarming gift or a congratulatory text, she showed up to their house for an impromptu visit, insisting that ‘family can come by anytime.’
What she really meant was that family can impose themselves on your life whenever they feel like it, making demands and turning into a guestzilla just in time for lunch.
