Being excluded is one of life’s cruelest tricks. It’s not just the act of being left out—it’s the silent reminder that, for some people, you simply don’t count. Most of us experience moments of exclusion here and there, but when it’s baked into the core of your relationships, especially with family, it’s a different kind of hurt. Family, society tells us, is supposed to be your safe haven. Yet for some, it’s the very place where they feel the least seen, the least valued, and the most alone.
Of course, there’s always the expectation to forgive, to be the bigger person, to put the past behind you. But forgiveness too often translates to tolerating whatever nonsense they throw your way simply because family. In this case, never mind the years spent being ignored, sidelined, or dismissed. In this twisted logic, their actions don’t matter so long as you don’t make a fuss about it. Maintaining the illusion of a happy family is far more important than actually being one.
