Merriam-Webster has officially designated ‘slop’ as its word of the year for 2025, summing up how so many of the things we consume on the internet these days are so prolific and low quality that there really is no other way to describe them. It’s not like everything we could find online in previous years was so high-brow and intelligent, but it is fair to say that whatever dumb things came before pale in comparison to what we are presented with now.

Obviously, memes are not exactly known for deep thought, but it has come to a point where the more traditional memetic formats seem to be of a better quality than whatever short-form video craze is being churned out next. If you happen to be the pondering type, they can occasionally provide some food for thought as well. It isn’t necessary to think deeply here, but maybe it could make the experience more interesting.
