It’s getting harder to fall asleep, isn’t it? Despite all of the silly meditation apps, sleep medications, and chamomile tea regimens, insomniacs are far more common than they once were. It seems like all of us are piloting solo missions through the night to get some shut-eye—for the most part—to no avail. However, it’s not the blaring city lights or the societal upheavals that’s keeping most of us awake, it’s the late-night screen time pinning our eyeballs open until the wee hours of the night. Regardless of our chronic fatigue and our desire for rest, brainrot videos are far too enticing, entertaining our half-lit minds with sand-cutting videos, miniature skateboard kickflips, and the maiden launch of the world’s largest watermelon cannon.
However, recently, a groundbreaking trend has sought to break the spell of filler-content hypnosis by engineering a hardstop into our algorithm. Breaking the fourth wall, these videos start with the classic «dumb» video content like «GRWM» or «Have you seen this new exciting tutorial?» Then, they pull a bait-and-switch just before the video climax that calls us out for doomscrolling, leaving us reeling with self-awareness.
Apparently, the first step to dealing with a problem is admitting you have a problem—and that’s exactly what these bait-and-switch videos achieve… Using humor of course.
