If you grew up in the pre-Internet era, you probably had a small collection of physical media like DVD’s, CD’s, VHS tapes, cassettes, or vinyl records. Squirreled away in the family entertainment center, your beloved favorites would never get the chance to gather dust because they were regularly being taken out for a spin. Unlike modern days, where we have an infinite amount of content to consume—Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, HBO, or any other random Ploobie-type streaming service. Back when we were young, if there was nothing on TV, it was time to watch, and re-watch, one of the 20 movies we had sitting in the armoire.
Despite having seen a film more than once, the magic and excitement never dwindled. Born from the boredom of a child’s spare time, nostalgia took root in our minds and lay dormant, only becoming perceptible once we had our first 9-to-5 job.
Where did the time go? Although I’ve already watched The Lion King (1994, obviously) over 1,000 times, I begin to wonder where my old VHS copy ended up. Does Mom still have it? Did she give it away to my younger cousins? Distraught with nostalgic worry, my mind itches like a fiend’s, desperate to relive the simpler memories of my childhood through the lens of my favorite Disney movie—or at least, my most watched Disney movie.
