What do Creed and Shrek have in common? Of course, both embody the post-grunge anthems of the early 2000s, but more recently, these two icons are forming a new fandom with Gen Z, earning a delayed round of applause through memeification.
As you’ve probably noticed, the resurgence of 2000s trends are relentless.
We’re constantly dodging new millennium flashbacks in the fashion aisles of our local clothing stores—expertly avoiding eye contact with the Jynco-style jeans, baby tops, and lowrise, ankle-length denim skirts—we can’t help but wonder why these styles didn’t die out with their decade. But while there are many outdated styles that we’d love to never see again, there are other icons from the past that deserve well-due remembrance.
Music, comedies, and games predating the modern era hold a special place in our hearts, especially when they’re hailed from the days of the early Internet when bad CGI and clunky graphics seemed «realistic,» but now seem like they were made by a two-year-old with an iPad. Compared to modernity, the nostalgia of long-passed lore is irresistible, and paired with the fundamental unseriousness of the 2020s, some archaic nuggets of humanity are making a huge comeback, and in many cases, topping the charts beyond their original success.
