We’ve all had one of those coworkers who doesn’t do what they’re supposed to do. If you’re on the same level as someone, it’s easy to notice that one or two people are carrying the bulk of the work, while another employee is twiddling their thumbs and getting the same pay/credit for doing much less. If you have good management, they will notice this inequitable distribution of the workload, but most workplaces don’t have great management. It’s more common for the mediocre employee to fly under the radar, not detected by their boss until their laziness gets so out of control, it’s impossible to miss. Meanwhile, the delinquent employee’s coworkers become increasingly resentful of their misbehavior, as they constantly have to pick up the slack.
It can be draining enough having to do the work of one employee. When you have to grind for someone who is not doing their job, but is also clueless about how they’re making their coworkers’ lives miserable, it’s easy to get a little bitter.
