Dumb Duolingo Memes For Both Linguists And Language Luddites

There are hundreds of different languages in the world, but only 20% of the U.S. population can fluently speak more than one. While not everyone necessarily needs to know any languages other than the one that they grew up speaking, it is enriching to gain the knowledge of another culture through how they speak. Plus, you can lord the skill over all those ignorant monolinguals out there.

Thirty years ago, the best way to do this as an adult was to sign up to an evening class and hope for the best. However, we live in the information age now, baby, and we can do away with all that unpleasant human interaction by replacing it with one persistent, virtual green owl. The Duolingo app has gained notoriety in recent years for its bewilderingly weird TikTok prescence, but it has also made a name for itself in memes over the years through the quirks of the app itself. You may have given up on learning Italian after a measly five day streak, but Duo will never let you forget it.
