Cringey Dude Ignites Ridicule For Gatekeeping Food

Food is all a lot of us have. When every day is the same grey and joyless stretch of monotony, you have to appreciate the few aspects of it that we can control to the point of being enjoyable. Eating meals falls into that category. If I have to eat to live, and I have the option of really, really indulging, that’s what I’m gonna do. While most of that involves cooking recipes I find on, say, Bon Appetit, sometimes that means spending my well-earned bucks on trying new restaurants.

Sometimes I’ll read about these places on Eater or in the New York Times, but most of my food recommendations come from word of mouth or social media. When friends posts a sumptuous, juicy burger, I reply with one word: «Where.» Most people are happy to share the culinary intel. But some people. Some people are stingy. Which is annoying as hell. Twitter user @JimmyMinhLee seems to have encountered the worst kind of food gatekeeper: one with some serious delusions of grandeur and way too much time on their hands.

That’s right, after our friend Jimmy asked where his Instagram friend scored his sumptuous-looking dinner, his friend replied with a nonsensical essay that manages to reject punctuation and exude humble-bragginess at the same time. Grammatical correctness should be a prerequisite for any kind of brag, but especially the humble ones.

Jimmy’s followers balked at the lengthy response, and the tweet went viral once people began to decry the act of gatekeeping food and sharing other exchanges that boast the same obnoxious energy. While a few people agreed that it’s good to keep hidden gems hidden, most people seem to be in the camp that believes we should be lifting one another up with food recommendations. We’d have to agree. Thankfully for Jimmy, the virality of his post led to a few foodie sleuths sharing the exact restaurant and dish he was curious about. So at least it’s a happy (and hopefully delicious) ending.
