‘My phone rings, and it’s HR asking if I’d come back’: Company lays off employee of 8 years one year before her retirement, the rest of her department quits afterwards

It is an unfortunate reality of the working world that most employees are never truly safe from getting sacked.

Sometimes, this happens for valid reasons, such as poor performance or misconduct. Plenty of other times, though, people lose their jobs purely for the sake of cutting costs or achieving the vision held by an out-of-touch member of senior management. It isn’t a pleasant experience, and it is something that all those who work should have a contingency plan for.

One of the few potential upsides in this situation is that a company may realize that they have made a mistake in their firing, and you can then be a witness to the consequences. It might not make up for the sting of being given the boot, but it can still be satisfying. Sometimes, it can even end up with a person getting their old job back—assuming they are willing to take it.
