Lessons People Learned at Great Personal Cost

Some life lessons are verbally taught by parents or other family members, perhaps a teacher or a mentor. My mom’s terrifying story of having a bad acid trip in college was enough to make me at least approach the drug with some healthy caution. Other lessons are better-learned through experience. For example, don’t sign up for a credit card while unemployed so you can do stuff like go to Puerto Rico with your friends. Still paying that one off. The latter types of lessons, while sometimes brutal emotionally, financially, or physically, usually alter the way we live our lives. A recent Reddit thread from u/ryanblumenow asked users to share their own hard-earned wisdom with the proverbial class. And boy, did they deliver with the tough truths and solemn realizations.
